Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Fenofibrate is the non-proprietary name for a medication primarily used to treat high cholesterol or high blood lipids. Less commonly, patients also buy fenofibrate to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetic retinopathy, and lower limb amputation when diabetes is present. Off-label it is sometimes used to help reduce high levels of uric acid in patients with gout, and it may be used in other off-label applications.
Patients planning to buy fenofibrate should be aware that this medication is available under a number of brand names, and while they all contain the same active ingredient, they are not necessarily interchangeable. Bioavailability can vary between brands, meaning it is easy to take too much or too little if attention is not paid. Additionally some require food to be consumed with each dose, while others do not.
All patients are advised to buy fenofibrate under the name their doctor advised. If choosing to switch brands, double-check with a doctor as to the recommended dosage of the new brand. This medication can produce serious side effects if misused; it is better safe than sorry.
Fenofibrate can be used in all ages, though dosage modifications will almost certainly be required for younger patients. Consult a doctor before administering this medication to anyone below age 18.
Treatment Overview
Fenofibrate comes in either tablets or capsules. Both versions should be swallowed whole and not opened, split, crushed, or otherwise damaged.
Most patients take 40 mg to 160 mg per day, depending on what's being treated as well as the brand of fenofibrate. Taking each dose with food varies from recommended to optional, depending upon the brand being taken. If unsure about a particular brand, taking it with food is a safe bet.
The majority of patients who buy fenofibrate take a dose just once per day. For best results each dose should be taken at the same time each day, to keep levels of the drug consistent in the body as well as help with remembering to take it.
The majority of patients taking this medication are also advised to make lifestyle changes, and in some cases these changes may be required to some extent prior to getting a prescription for fenofibrate. Common lifestyle changes include:
The above are very general; a doctor can recommend specific changes that will benefit a given patient. Patients are strongly encouraged to comply with such changes to as great an extent as possible.
Fenofibrate can be taken for as long as it provides benefit, which is rarely indefinite assuming lifestyle changes are made. A doctor will also monitor for developing severe side effects during treatment, and if discovered treatment may also end.
Precautions
Patients with a history of other major medical disorders should not buy fenofibrate without first discussing risks with a doctor. Of particular concern are:
Fenofibrate effects on unborn babies are unclear. If pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, mothers should discuss risks versus benefit with a doctor. Mothers are advised to not breastfeed if taking fenofibrate.
Fenofibrate can interact with a variety of other medications, including over-the-counter varieties and recreational drugs, including alcohol. Double-check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medications, and for best results avoid use of recreational drugs for the duration of treatment.
Effects of this medication on patients below 18 years of age have not been studied. While it is sometimes used in this age range, parents are advised to not buy fenofibrate for those under age 18 without explicit approval from a doctor.
